S.C. Press Association honors Aiken Standard, North Augusta Star

The Aiken Standard and the  Star was honored for journalistic achievement at the 2013 South Hermes Picotin Herpicot Crocodile Leather Chocolate silver Bag Carolina Press Association annual awards banquet Saturday.

The Star won nine awards and Aiken Standard won 11 awards, chief among them tying with The Times and Democrat newspaper in Orangeburg in the category of Public Hermes Kelly Handbag 35CM Red Silver Service for a Daily Newspaper. The distinction was given to the Aiken Standard based on its Community Insights series, which ran for approximately three weeks in 2012 and sought to answer the question, How can we make our community better?

 The impetus for the special series, according to Publisher Scott Hunter, was the tragic murders of two Aiken Public Hermes Kelly Handbag 35CM Yellow Silver Safety officers, Scotty Richardson and Sandy Rogers.
Columns in the series were written by community leaders with expertise in a field or by those with a passion for a cause.  I'm particularly pleased that the judges recognized our newspaper for its community service, Hunter said. That series represented a significant effort on the part of our staff. But, it was also an investment by our community. We had a number of caring people write columns for the series. Our community is the real winner of that award.
In addition to its other awards, the Hermes Jypsiere Shoulder Bag peach Gold Aiken Standard won second place for its 2012 political/election coverage. The State  received first place, and The Post and Courier won third.
 I'm very proud of our news staff, Hunter said. We never do our work just in an attempt to win an award. But when others acknowledge the great work that our staff does for our readers, it is very welcomed.
